9. Dani Cinali Final Project Proposal

For my final project, I would like to bridge the gap between visual art and music. I believe that music is one of the best ways to portray human emotion and I would like to attempt to capture this emotion in a series of paintings. The challenge for me will be to create my own type of vocabulary that, while abstract, does convey a deeper sense of purpose and intention. I would like my final composition to evoke the same or similar emotions one feels and mindset one develops when listening to the music. One artist who was able to successful do this was Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was also inspired by the emotional power of music. By examining his and others’ work, I hope to develop a better sense of the process involved in this type of project and produce results that speak to this understanding as well as to the music itself.

9. Fritzi Strauss-Final Project Proposal

I enjoyed the material alchemy project and would like to explore it further. For my final project I am considering making a garment out of paper money and toy with the idea of an 'investment'.

8 - Bryant A. Estrada - Example of Material Alchemy & Final Proposal

I believe these are prime examples of material alchemy (an ipod made of garbage, and a newspaper dress). For my final project I am thinking of using what I've learned through sculpture in class, and my prior knowledge too. As of right now I am thinking of perhaps making a sculptural self-portrait. I will most likely try to use materials that I have and have not used in order to be exposed to other types of materials and become a better artist overall.

Piece from a group if British artists called the "New Alchemists."

9- Becca Coleman: Final Project Proposal

For my material alchemy project I made a small bedside table. The focus of the project was on combining different materials (wood and wine bottles) as much as it was on functionality. For my final project I would like to continue in this 3D/furniture vein, but my goal is to make something that is fully functional (i.e. I will not sacrifice functionality for anything else, as I did for the material alch project). I hope to make either another table or a bench. I will settle on one of these two options after further exploring the available materials.

Piven creates incredible likenesses of well-known faces with the use of everyday objects. Check out more of his portraits at his website: http://www.pivenworld.com

Material Alchemy- Mary Kate LoPiccolo

Fashion, in my opinion is one of the most accessible and intriguing types of material alchemy. Above is a photo from Marc Jacob's Spring 2010 Collection runway show. I am currently in the process of learning how to construct my own garments, and his work is a constant reminder that once I master the techniques necessary for proper construction, I need to follow my instincts and push the envelope with my own unique designs.

Danielle Sheridan- An Invitation to GREEN SCREEN MAY 1ST

Hi All-

I have been working really hard on this and would love it if you guys could come check this out:

GREEN SCREEN
MAY 1ST

2-9 PM
MAIN GREEN
EXHIBITION/EVENT

GREEN SCREEN is a seven-hour exhibition/event of site-specific, interactive sculpture, installations and performances which will be held in the central hub of Brown University's campus; the main green. GREEN SCREEN will explore how art can form a dialogue with the space it inhabits and how this dialogue can both reconfigure spatial interactions and create entirely new environments. Extending from early afternoon to evening, Green Screen will also feature a series of programs to complement the pieces, including but not limited to: artist talks, performances, video screenings, a reception and curator-led tours.

9-Edy: Material Alchemy

I found these can-made cars in Trinidad, Cuba. The locals transformed waste into these delicate little things. Due to the embargo, the cola cans you see here are not Coke-Cola, Pepsi, or any American brand.

Here are some photographs of "Dr. Evermore's Forevertron Sculpture Garden." Tom Every uses discarded industrial scrap metal to create these fantastic and elaborate designs.

These pieces are by

8 - Justine: Trash Pirates

San Francisco's city "Recology" program is the name of the service that picks up everyone's curbside trash/recycling/compost bins. But in addition to running the trash services, they have a really cool program called Artist in Residence in which they provide several artists with studio space, access to materials, and resources from recycling facilities. These artists create really cool works of art that usually use trash in innovative ways, showing people the value of resource conservation...and that their trash could one day be used for something beautiful. I visited once with my high school and saw a "statue garden" of statues made of trash items.

This guy's name is Ben Burke, and he created a fleet of pirate ships using trash and old car engines. These seven ships were sort of like moving stages for an hour-long play performed on the vessels as they sailed around.

For some reason I'm having trouble posting these pictures through the blog, but here's a link to a few flickr pictures of the boats:

8 - Rachel Watson: Soda Can Pull Tabs

In 1997, the artist Jeffrey Schrier heard about a class's collection of 11 million soda can pull tabs to commemorate the 6 million Jews and 5 million other minorities who were murdered in the Holocaust. When he found out that the tabs were about to be recycled, he began a project called "Wings of Witness" through which he has transformed these ordinary tabs into a sculptural butterfly and Holocaust memorial in honor of the poem "The Butterfly" by Pavel Friedmann who was murdered at Auschwitz.

8 - Bryant A. Estrada - Postcard

For the postcard I chose to use the flood that happened in Rhode Island last week as the image portrayed, considering I stayed in RI for the break. I collected a bunch of pictures from online (news websites, Facebook, Google, etc.) and decided to make a collage with some of the pictures.
