8 - Justine: Trash Pirates

San Francisco's city "Recology" program is the name of the service that picks up everyone's curbside trash/recycling/compost bins. But in addition to running the trash services, they have a really cool program called Artist in Residence in which they provide several artists with studio space, access to materials, and resources from recycling facilities. These artists create really cool works of art that usually use trash in innovative ways, showing people the value of resource conservation...and that their trash could one day be used for something beautiful. I visited once with my high school and saw a "statue garden" of statues made of trash items.

This guy's name is Ben Burke, and he created a fleet of pirate ships using trash and old car engines. These seven ships were sort of like moving stages for an hour-long play performed on the vessels as they sailed around.
