In 1997, the artist Jeffrey Schrier heard about a class's collection of 11 million soda can pull tabs to commemorate the 6 million Jews and 5 million other minorities who were murdered in the Holocaust. When he found out that the tabs were about to be recycled, he began a project called "Wings of Witness" through which he has transformed these ordinary tabs into a sculptural butterfly and Holocaust memorial in honor of the poem "The Butterfly" by Pavel Friedmann who was murdered at Auschwitz.http://www.wingsofwitness.org/ProjectBackground.htm
