1- Joe Milner: What is Art?

Art is an object produced, reproduced, and/or assigned meaning by one or more individuals with aesthetic intent and experienced by an audience. On the artist’s side, I make all these qualifications because I don’t believe that the artist must make something materially new. As for the requirement of an audience, I don’t see the point in assigning meaning to an object if no one will ever again view it. The most problematic part of art after its creation is its interpretation — the interaction of the artistic intent that shaped the object with the audience’s knowledge and experience. However, as long as those interactions occur, there is art.

The included image is from an exhibit by Rivane Neuenschwander. She took a Disney comic book released in Brazil and painted over the characters and text so that they are completely blank.
