1- Sophie Soloway: What is Art?

Art provokes; art has beauty to at least one person; art does not related to functionality; art expresses an idea or an emotion with color, line, sound, texture, light, and imagination.
Andre Gide said, “The most beautiful things are those that madness prompts and reason writes.” To me, that statement is both true (and therefore functional) and it is art - it makes me see the world in a new way, I appreciate the concise grace of the sentence, and the contrast between the words "madness" and "reason" delights me.
If one expresses himself in a beautiful provocation, then one has created art.

This still is taken from the short stop-animated film "Madame Tutli Putli," in which every frame is carefully planned and haunting.
